Poultry Diseases: Common Diseases, Symptoms, Prevention and Treatment
Disease is a condition caused by living factors such as viruses, bacteria, or parasites, or by nonliving factors such as nutritional deficiencies, toxins, and other physical or chemical agents. Diseases can be classified according to their causative factors. Some common poultry diseases and their characteristic symptoms are described below.
Preventive measures are provided, and for appropriate treatment, poultry producers are advised to consult a qualified veterinarian. Diseases cause significant economic losses in poultry production. These losses are due not only to bird mortality but also to reduced production.
Farmers should therefore remain vigilant for any signs of disease in the flock so that control or treatment measures can be initiated early and losses minimized. However, it is prudent for farmers to take all possible precautions to keep the flock disease-free.
