In a slatted floor system, iron rods or wooden slats are used as the floor, usually 2–3 feet above ground level, to facilitate the passage of droppings through the slats. Wooden slats or iron rods of 2-inch diameter can be placed lengthwise along the house, with 1-inch spaces between the rods.
